If Facebook has its way, Google may not be the go-to source for patients to find information about local dentists for much longer. Facebook recently began rolling out its new Graph Search feature to a limited number of members, with intentions to release it fully later this year. This new search feature adds even more importance to your social media presence, and it may change some of the techniques used in web marketing for dentists as well as dental social media.
Even without Graph Search, you can search for “people, places and things” using Facebook’s search box. If a patient knows the name of your dental office, they can find your Facebook page. In this way, social media allows patients to connect with and engage their dentists online. This feature doesn’t currently help you recruit new patients who have never heard of your practice, though.
With Graph Search, however, potential patients will be able to search dentists their friends like or find practices they recommend. People trust their family and friends to provide recommendations, and word-of-mouth is well-known as the most effective form of advertising. This means there are hundreds of potential referrals for every patient who likes your Facebook page.
To prepare your Facebook page for the new search, you should first make sure it is up-to-date. Then find ways to encourage patients to check-in, mention visiting your office in a status or tag you in a photo. With Graph Search, all of these interactions will appear when their friends search for a dentist on Facebook. Interaction from your office also helps. Responding to posts and interacting to past, present and potential patients on social media builds your online presence.
It’s also important to note that Graph Search provides links to sites outside of Facebook as well, using Bing’s search engine. While the ranking system for Bing is similar to Google’s, it is not identical. Because of this, some attention should be given to SEO and page ranking on Bing before Graph Search is launched.
